SENTINELESE TRIBE
India is a country full of
diversities. Its history is thousands of years old, where many tribes have
already lived and many tribes still exist. And with today's modernization, it
is impossible to keep them untouchable, but there are some tribes who are still
in their thousands of years old-time like situation. Sentinelese are one of
them.
SENTINELESE ISLAND
The Sentinel people are basically
from North Sentinel Island, which is situated in the Bay of Bengal. The Sentinelese are still a mystery for the World. We can say they are one of the world’s last uncontacted peoples. Originally they consider the Andamanese tribes.
Andaman has a lot of tribes like Jarawas, Onge, Shompen, Nicobarese and
the Great Andamanese. Onge, Jarawa, and Sentinelese are
from the Andaman island. Shompen and Nicobarese are from the Nicobar island. It
is believed that many tribes came here 60,000 years ago from Africa.
The Sentinelese people are having dark
skin and a little shorter as compared to the normal human being. It is believed
that their population is within 50 to 200. On the basis of the 1971 census it
is considered as their population at around 82, and in 1981 census at 100.
The Sentinelese never allows anyone
to interact with them and even not allowed to get a chance to establish direct
contact with them. They always take outsiders like their enemies. And there are
also examples that they do not hold back from killing outsiders. In the recent
past, they killed one American person (John Allen Chau), Chau had gone to the
island for preaching Christianity to the Sentinelese.
Government Action For Sentinelese
Even after a lot of efforts of the
governments, it was found that, after bringing them in contact with the
external environment, they were not able to survive in a new atmosphere. Their immune system was still very weak to handle even a little change in
environment.
In 1956 the government of India
declare the North Sentinel island is a tribal reserve area and prohibited for
travel within 3 miles of the island because of their safety.
